Hours and Overview for Pictou County Solid Waste Management Facility

Hours Of Operation:

Monday through Friday 8 am to 4 pm

Saturday 8 am to 12 noon

Special Saturday hours for the month of May are 8 am to 4 pm

All bagged material delivered to the Tranfer Station must be in clear bags with the exception of one colored bag per vehicle, all loads must be covered with a tarp.

Overview

Pictou County Solid Waste Management System is responsible for administrating the solid waste resource management program, as well as the enforcement of the Municipal Bylaw in the Towns of New Glasgow, Westville, Trenton, Pictou, Stellarton and the County of Pictou.

• Sorting Waste at the Source - All Industrial, Commercial, Institutions, (IC&I) and residents in Nova Scotia are required to sort their waste into three categories: recyclables, compostables and garbage.

• Residential Collection - All waste is collected on the same day, once every two weeks.

• Transfer Station - The Transfer Station located at Mount William accepts waste that is not banned from landfills. The waste is then transferred off-site for disposal or processing. The site is open to the public and user fees apply.

• Communication and Enforcement - Helping the public to understand and comply with the waste management system is essential to its success. The Pictou County Solid Waste Resource Management Bylaw sets the rules, and communication initiatives, like the annual waste management calendar and community outreach initiatives help to keep residents informed.

Why We Need This System

• In December 2005, the Department of Environment closed the former Mount William Landfill Site. Waste is now shipped to the Eastern Solid Waste Facility in Guysborough.

• As a community, the more we can reduce, reuse, recycle and compost the less we have to transport for disposal. Waste reduction (through recycling, composting and other efforts) is the most economical solution for the County as a whole.

• We are mandated under Provincial Waste-Resource Management Regulations to keep banned material out of landfill (eg. recyclables and compostables).

• Contractual agreements with the Eastern Solid Waste Management Facility in Guysborough require us to exercise due diligence in the removal of "banned" materials from garbage. If contractual obligations are not met, we may be subject to penalties (i.e. paying higher disposal fees or having loads rejected outright).

• To protect and conserve resources.

We Are Part of a Bigger Picture

The Nova Scotia government has set a new target to reduce by 1/3 the amount of waste we send to landfill. This means a goal of 300kg/waste/person by 2015. Regions around the province are working to achieve this goal. To learn more about the provincial waste management strategy visit www.gov.ns.ca/enla/waste/ and www.rrfb.com
